Florida School Edits Girls’ Yearbook Photos To Hide Their Chests

A Florida highschool sparked an outcry from college students and fogeys after it digitally altered feminine college students’ yearbook photos to cowl up their chests and shoulders.

At least 80 photographs of ladies have been edited within the yearbook for Bartram Trail High School, positioned simply south of Jacksonville. No photos of boys have been edited, together with a picture of the swim crew by which male college students have been proven carrying Speedo bathing fits, scholar Riley O’Keefe and fogeys who noticed the yearbook mentioned per The New York Times.

Although the college mentioned the pictures have been edited as a result of the ladies have been in violation of the college’s gown code, college students and fogeys criticized the coverage, calling it outdated, damaging and sexist.

O’Keefe, a 15-year-old in ninth grade, found a black bar had been added to her chest in her picture. She was by no means instructed that her outfit was inappropriate, she mentioned.

“It made me feel a little uncomfortable that that’s what they noticed when they looked at our pictures,” O’Keefe instructed native information station News4Jax. She mentioned the edits made college students really feel like their our bodies weren’t acceptable.

Other college students instructed Action News Jax they felt embarrassed, sexualized, disgusted and ashamed.

Adrian Bartlett, whose daughter, Brooke, is in ninth grade on the college and in addition had her picture edited, instructed News4Jax she was involved about the way in which the coverage was being enforced.

“It was a little sad, a little worrisome because my daughter has struggled with mental health and self-esteem and body issues and even resulted in a couple of hospitalizations this year because of that,” Bartlett mentioned. “So this is just one more thing that could be super-detrimental to these young minds. So it’s, it’s scary.”

The college mentioned yearbook photographs should adhere to decorate code pointers and the 80 edited photographs have been deemed inappropriate by a feminine yearbook trainer.

“Bartram Trail High School’s previous procedure was to not include student pictures in the yearbook that they deemed in violation of the student code of conduct so the digital alterations were a solution to make sure all students were included in the yearbook,” the college mentioned in a press release to Action News Jax. “At this point, the school is offering refunds to any parents calling about this issue. The school is receiving feedback from parents/guardians/students on making this process better for next year.”

The college made headlines earlier this 12 months after one other controversy tied to the gown code. Dozens of ladies have been known as out of sophistication for gown code violations and compelled to vary or unzip their jackets so an administrator might study what they have been carrying. O’Keefe began a web based petition after that incident calling for change. It obtained greater than 5,000 signatures.

“The dress code is clearly based on the sexualization of young women and their clothing, especially since many girls are told they are dressed inappropriately or that what they are wearing may be ‘distracting’ to the boys,” the petition said. “It is clear the issue here isn’t what kind of clothing the young women are wearing but how others interpret them.”
