Sports News:
Despite loss, Lightning have blueprint to play without Point

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) – Brayden Point didn’t stroll out of the tunnel to the ice together with his Tampa Bay Lightning teammates for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference last, and there’s no certainty he’ll achieve this in Game 4.

Sure, Tampa Bay might use its main scorer and playoff MVP front-runner after shedding to the New York Islanders to reduce its sequence lead to 2-1. But of their 5-3 loss, the Lightning could have discovered a blueprint on how to play without Point, simply as they’ve gotten to this level without captain Steven Stamkos.

Without Point, Stamkos and suspended winger Alex Killorn, coach Jon Cooper caught together with his patented 11 forwards/seven defensemen lineup and the Lightning began hitting the Islanders extra and acquired offensive contributions from throughout their lineup. That will want to proceed if Point stays unavailable due to harm.

“Guys got to take more responsibility,” defenseman Victor Hedman mentioned. “You’re not going to replace those players, but I think guys really stepped up and took advantage of maybe more ice time and playing in probably more offensive situations.”

Shutdown middle Anthony Cirelli regarded the half taking on the No. 1 middle spot, Tyler Johnson scored a aim paying homage to his 2015 Stanley Cup Final run and reigning MVP Nikita Kucherov was sharp within the 22 minutes of ice time that have change into the norm for him. Maybe Point’s capability to end would have tipped the steadiness, however Cooper thought the Lightning had been their “own worst enemy” and gift-wrapped the sport for the Islanders.

“I don’t think they outplayed us,” mentioned top-line winger Ondrej Palat, who scored his seventh postseason aim. “I thought we played a good enough game to win.”

Hedman and Cooper noticed loads of positives, too, together with the physicality. The Lightning outhit the Islanders 62-44, matching a tricky opponent with some additional sandpaper.

“We’re not shy to go to the dirty areas and be physical,” Hedman mentioned. “That’s always part of your game plan, to make it hard on the opponents. It wasn’t really that we talked too much about it before the game. We just know that’s part of our DNA.”

The Lightning’s DNA is extra velocity and ability than brute energy, and so they’re extra imposing in that means after they have Point, who’s the highest scorer left within the playoffs. They gained Game 2 regardless of him leaving early within the second interval and never returning, and gamers have dedicated to remaining constant irrespective of the lineup adjustments.

“As forwards, you don’t want to change your game,” winger Blake Coleman mentioned earlier this week. “You don’t want to try to do too much just because you’re missing Pointer. Obviously he gives us a lot of offense and lot of punch, but everybody’s got a role on this team and you don’t want to stray from it just because you’re missing a guy.”

Of course, holes want to be crammed. Mitchell Stephens and Carter Verhaeghe entered the lineup, whereas Johnson and Cirelli took on larger roles.

Johnson ended a seven-game aim drought by deflecting a puck previous goaltender Semyon Varlamov and mentioned it was good to contribute. Cirelli performed between Palat and Kucherov on the primary line and maybe did probably the most to make up for Point’s absence.

“He’s really grown as a player in this league,” Cooper mentioned of Cirelli. “Guys love playing with him. He does all the right things. It’s nice to have that 1-2 punch down the middle and it’s nice to have a guy that can seamlessly go in there and fill a spot of a player that’s been exceptional for us.”
