NEW YORK (AP) – The Fordham ladies’s basketball crew has achieved its finest to observe each coronavirus regulation and protocol this season, and it’s labored because the Rams haven’t had one optimistic check.

Unfortunately, a significant uptick of COVID circumstances on the college’s campus has compelled the college to pause the complete athletic division for 2 weeks beginning final Sunday.

That’s not sitting nicely with the gamers.

“It’s a really tough spot,” junior captain Kaitlyn Downey stated in a cellphone interview Wednesday. “We saw this number on Fordham’s COVID dashboard keep jumping. Kids returned to campus, Super Bowl parties. One day it was 80 and then we saw it jump to 115. We knew that wasn’t good.”

The pause was triggered as soon as there have been over 100 lively coronavirus circumstances on campus throughout a two-week time interval resulting from New York state well being laws. While many basketball applications have been put on pause this yr because of the virus, few have been suspended and not using a optimistic check inside the crew.

“It’s been a really emotional last three days. There have been a lot of tears and a lot of questions,” Fordham coach Stephanie Gaitley stated.

The Rams have taken over 1,400 COVID assessments since they got here on campus within the fall and all of them have come again destructive.

“It’s frustrating as we test three times a week and we’ve been zero for six months,” Downey stated. “Staying that negative for that long with 25-plus people in our program is a stellar statistics to ride by. ”

Downey and her teammates began a petition to try to persuade the college’s president to allow them to play the ultimate three weeks of the common season on the street. It’s already garnered over 3,500 signatures.

“Our petition was never to minimize any other program as we understand the gravity of the situation,′ Downey said. ”We know the athletics division is caught in a troublesome state of affairs. We adopted the whole lot to a T.”

The ladies’s basketball crew was having one other stable yr, sitting in second place within the Atlantic 10, a number of video games behind Dayton.

As of now, the crew’s remaining 5 video games can be worn out, together with their senior recreation that was scheduled for final Sunday. Assuming the optimistic coronavirus circumstances return down, they might be capable to have a number of days of apply earlier than the convention match in early March.

“We’ve followed every protocol and understand the overall picture,” stated Gaitley, who delivered flowers and donuts to her seniors earlier this week to try to elevate their spirits. “The time frame is the concern since it’s the end of the season. At the beginning we wouldn’t be in this situation and having this conversation.”

Downey and the opposite basketball captains met with the college’s interim athletic director, Ed Kull, to see if there was something they might do to salvage the remaining of their common season. The Rams even prompt taking part in the remaining of their video games on the street, just like what Stanford did for 2 months when their county wouldn’t permit any athletic actions because of the virus.

They left the assembly, in accordance with Downey, with none actual solutions.

“It’s unfortunate we have to pause our athletic activities but we have to take this critically important step to prevent the further spread of COVID on campus,” Kull stated in a web based assertion on Fordham’s web site asserting the pause. “We know this is difficult for our student-athletes and will continue to support them with our mental health and academic resources. As I’ve said throughout the pandemic, we will do everything we can in order to protect the health and well-being of not only the student-athletes but of the entire university community.”

Fordham President Joseph M. McShane had an already scheduled city corridor with the Rams athletes for later this week. Downey was certain that the pause can be a significant matter of dialog at that assembly.

While they anticipate any sort of decision, the crew has been attempting to remain prepared.

“We’re still trying to figure out the logistics of everything that we’re allowed to do,’ Downey said. ”The guidelines say we’re allowed to train, attempting to get into gyms outdoors Fordham to have the ability to proceed to apply as a crew. with out the coaches We have a particular probability at profitable this match and end what we began.”
