Gase hopes unhappy Adams remains with Jets

NEW YORK (AP) – Adam Gase nonetheless completely envisions Jamal Adams as a member of the New York Jets this season.

Plain and easy.

That’s regardless of the star security’s commerce request, all of Adams’ headline-grabbing social media posts – and the rumors and studies which have dominated the final a number of weeks of the offseason.

“Yes,” Gase stated Friday throughout a convention name, “I want Jamal on our team.”

The 24-year-old Adams is in a contract standoff with the Jets that took its most unsure flip final week when he requested the workforce to deal him. He additionally instructed a fan in a touch upon Instagram that “maybe it’s time to move on,” and seemed to be saying goodbye to pal and teammate Marcus Maye in one other put up.

While Adams seems to be closing the door on ever strolling by way of the doorways on the Jets‘ facility again, the team currently has no plans to trade him. Adams wants an extension, but he is under contract this season and next – and New York could potentially use the franchise tag on him in 2022. So, the Jets don’t really feel obligated to redo Adams’ rookie deal proper now.

And that has led to the friction between Adams and the workforce.

“This is a tough part of the business, when one of your best players is working through things with our organization,” Gase stated. “We’ve got to figure out a way to get to a good place, which will get him back, in the right spot and ready to go.”

“Anything that’s going to deal with communication with Jamal will stay between us,” Gase insisted. “That’s how we’re operating, keeping our locker room tight.”

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams stated throughout a convention name Thursday that he “has Adams’ back,” but in addition wouldn’t get into the contract state of affairs. Williams referred to as Adams a possible Hall of Famer and effusively praised his playmaking expertise and on-field management.

Gase was additionally very complimentary of Adams, who has been the workforce’s prime all-around performer the final two seasons.

“He’s been one of our best players and most consistent guys that we had last year,” Gase stated. “The value that he brings to this team and what he does on not only game day, but in practice.”

Adams is intense on the sector, which has made him a favourite of followers, coaches and teammates. He has usually affected video games with his play since being chosen sixth total within the 2017 NFL draft. Adams has developed into arguably the perfect security within the league, and believes he has confirmed his worth to the workforce.

That’s why he was so indignant final October when basic supervisor Joe Douglas fielded cellphone calls from golf equipment inquiring about what it would take for the Jets to deal Adams. While Douglas set the value tag exorbitantly excessive, Adams felt Douglas mustn’t have even entertained these conversations. It took per week for the security to chill off and communicate to Douglas and Gase once more.

Gase, nevertheless, says there isn’t a deep-rooted animosity between him and Adams.

“My relationship with Jamal has been good since the time I’ve gotten here,” Gase stated. “We had a lot of discussions throughout the season trying to figure out ways to win. To me, we’ve always gotten along well. There’s been a lot of dialogue between us, especially about on- and off-the-field type topics.”

Adams selected to not take part within the workforce’s voluntary offseason, which was held remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Teams are at the moment scheduled to open necessary coaching camp on July 28 – and Gase wouldn’t speculate as as to if the Jets and Adams will have the ability to transfer ahead collectively or if the state of affairs is perhaps irreparable.

“It’s a tough part of the business,” Gase reiterated. “And our job is to work through difficult times and tough situations and find solutions.”
