The Latest: IHSA allows teams in playoffs if strike ends

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The Latest on the Chicago lecturers’ strike interruption of fall highschool sports activities (all instances native):

Highly-ranked Simeon Career Academy will have the ability to play in the state soccer playoffs if a strike by Chicago faculty lecturers ends by mid-next week.

The Illinois High School Association agreed to waive a rule for Simeon and two different Chicago excessive colleges requiring them to have performed eight video games this season. One Simeon opponent known as off a scheduled recreation, leaving Simeon at 6-1. It’s ranked third in the state in Class 6A.

But the IHSA refused to grant a waiver to a rule that teams not in faculty for seven or extra days should have three separate days of apply earlier than competing. So, the strike must finish by Wednesday to provide the colleges the required apply time earlier than the primary spherical of the state playoffs Nov. 2.



Simeon and different Chicago prep soccer gamers rallied outdoors Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s workplace Friday morning, calling for an finish to the strike.

A strike by Chicago lecturers has moved from the picket line to the taking part in discipline.

The walkout that started Oct. 17 has blocked many fall-sports teams from post-season play.

Khalyl (kuh-LEEL’) Warren is a senior Simeon Career Academy soccer participant. The workforce is ranked third in the state however can’t chase a state title. Warren says the state playoffs are a showcase for athletes pursuing a university scholarship.

Ian Bacon is a plaintiff in a lawsuit towards the Illinois High School Association for excluding Chicago cross-country runners from the state meet. The Jones College Prep senior says the authorized motion is to guard future athletes in addition to assist present ones.

The Chicago Teachers Union says it sympathizes with the athletes. A college district spokesman didn’t reply with remark.
