U.S. Diplomat Claims Trump Appointee Fired Him For Mentioning Obama

A former U.S. diplomat says he was fired from his job as the deputy chief of mission on the U.S. embassy in London only for mentioning Barack Obama in a speech.

Lewis Lukens spent three many years within the U.S. international service, together with stints because the U.S. ambassador to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau and the appearing ambassador to the United Kingdom in 2017.

However, GQ journal studies that Lukens was fired in October 2018, after his boss realized he had included an Obama anecdote in a speech to college college students in England

At the time of the speech, President Donald Trump had not too long ago attacked British leaders like former Prime Minister Theresa May and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. But in his speak to college students, Lukens emphasised that allies can disagree in a constructive method.

To that finish, Lukens associated an anecdote from Obama’s 2013 go to to Senegal, when a reporter requested the president if he had mentioned LGBTQ rights with the Senegalese chief.

The subject may have been dicey, contemplating the African nation criminalizes same-se-x relationships as “unnatural.” But Lukens defined that Obama was in a position to deftly reply the reporter’s query with out inflicting a global incident.

However, every week after the speech, Lukens’ boss, U.S. Ambassador Woody Johnson, a Trump political appointee, fired Lukens. It was simply seven months forward of when Lukens was scheduled to depart for a brand new project.

The purpose? Lukens had talked about Obama in his speech to the scholars, GQ reported. That’s an obvious no-no for a lot of of Trump’s political appointees, whom Lukens mentioned don’t belief the full-time diplomats.

“There’s a higher level of mistrust from political ambassadors of career FSOs than I’ve ever seen in my life,” Lukens informed GQ. “Many of Trump’s political ambassadors have an unfounded belief that government bureaucrats are overwhelmingly Democrats and liberals and working against Trump’s agenda, and that’s just not the case.”

The State Department didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.
